Canarsie Has A New Eye Doctor
By Angela G. Nannetti
She’s a bright, highly-educated young woman who could have easily excelled at any occupation, anywhere in the world, But having been raised by parents Chenna and Lalitha Reddy, who have been practicing internal medicine in Canarsie for about three decades, it’s no surprise that like her sister, Arthi, Swathi Reddy also developed a keen interest in the medical field and a close connection to the community that her family has come to know and love so well.
Dr. Reddy studied at New York Medical College, conducted extensive glaucoma research at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary and served as Chief Resident at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine before pursuing further sub-specialty training in glaucoma at The Wills Eye Institute, which is consistently ranked as one of the top eye hospitals in the country, and continues to stay abreast of what’s cutting-edge by teaching medical residents one day a week. Top doctors with those kinds of accolades often pass up Brooklyn neighborhoods and head straight for Manhattan’s rich and famous, but not Dr. Reddy.
“It had to be here,” she said. “I couldn’t think of anywhere else I’d rather open my practice.” Her office, in the annex to the St. Jude Medical Center, at 9320 Flatlands Avenue, is not only aesthetically pleasing, but is also technologically state-of-the-art, which can be seen on a virtual tour at www.stjudeeye.com. What really sets Dr. Reddy apart from her peers, however, is the time and attention she devotes to each and every one of her patients. Dr. Reddy’s staff is friendly, the wait times are minimal, and the care is top notch, as seen from the reviews she receive on her website and other rating forums. Her authenticity and passion for eye health become immediately evident when you meet her.
She speaks eloquently of the importance of having bi-annual or at least annual eye exams even if you think your eye are perfectly healthy. “Patients with glaucoma usually do not have any symptoms until it has reached an advanced stage at which time irreversible loss of vision has already occurred,” Dr. Reddy explained. “It hurts when I have to tell a patient they aren’t going to get their vision back. It’s heartbreaking. Especially because it is treatable when detected early.” Comprehensive eye exams include screens for glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataracts and diabetic eye diseases. DMV eye screenings and children’s screening are also available.
Dr. Reddy treats patients ages 8+ and accepts many insurances, including Medicaid and Medicare. Her office is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and some Saturdays. Please visit www.stjudeeye.com or call 718-257-4549 for more information or to schedule your appointment.
